Barbie isn't just a nostalgic toy from childhood. Since her 1959 debut, she's become a full-fledged pop culture icon, launching decades worth of discourse about everything from hyper-consumerism to women's empowerment.

BARBIE dolls captured my imagination in childhood, and I've maintained a fascination with Barbie, both the doll and the cultural figure, ever since. Over the years, my perspectives on the plastic princess have evolved to become more complex, but Barbie will always have a place in my heart and on my shelf.
