2024 was a landmark year for music. Between Brat Summer, the rise of Midwest Princess Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter’s mainstream breakthrough, Tinashe’s re-emergence as a hitmaker to watch, the main pop girl rebrands of two Raes (Addison and Tate Mc-) and the triumphant return of some of my favorite independent artists, there was a lot to love.

My 2024 Spotify Wrapped reflects a lot of the year’s trending tracks, as well as a few longtime faves and new releases from some of my most-loved artists. Here, I share my thoughts on 24 of my most-played songs of 2024. They are in order according to my Spotify Wrapped, but I excluded songs that ranked in previous years.

For the first time, I wrote at least 100 words about each song. (OK, one of them just misses the mark at 93 words.) You’ll find everything from lyrical interpretations, comparisons to similar songs, mini career retrospectives, music video analyses and even a few reflections on death, as well as a brief foray into pomology. The longer entries are some of my favorites, but I tried to make each entry engaging and entertaining. I hope you find something you like about these songs or my writing! I actually learned a few things myself while working on this — maybe you will, too.

You can scroll through each page to skim all the entries, or jump to specific songs using the navigation box below.

CONTENT WARNING: Please note, some songs and their descriptions contain mature themes and explicit lyrics, mostly references to sex and sexuality. There are also mentions of death and grief. I’ve included the “WARNING” unicode symbol () in the headings of entries that contain particularly sensitive content. It’s nothing that would be age-restricted on YouTube, but it may be inappropriate or triggering for some audiences. Use your own judgement and proceed with caution. I am not responsible for anyone who chooses to view this content, nor for the content of the songs, external websites and any other third-party sources referenced or linked to here.
